Well, given that alcohol is one the last luxuries consumers are likely to give up regardless of how well the economy is performing, it's certainly worth noting. The fact that it's also an enjoyable pastime is just an added bonus.

Even a passing glance at the picture is enough to tell that the scarf is a fashion statement rather than a political statement. Also, a quick Google Image Search shows that kaffiyeh are not limited to black & white - they are found in all colors and patterns. Should all scarves to be verboten now? Ms. Malkin knew exactly what she was doing when she commented on this ad - creating a controversy from nothing, which is something her network is known for.

That news commentator must not have been so "educated" and "informed." It's absolutely ridiculous that Dunkin Donuts agreed to pull the ad, as there was certainly no ill-intent with the addition of a simple black and white scarf. When did the world become some bent of political correctness? And where do we draw the line? Why must we appease everyone's sensitivity simply because a mal-informed media "expert" filed a complaint against what was meant as an obvious fashion statement, not a political or cultural statement?

It's also currently happening in South Africa as we speak (or write). Thousands have already been killed, simply for being "immigrants." More than 18,000 people from Mozambique have returned to their native country for fear that they'll end up as the victims in this bloody battle. And 8 million Zimbabweans have nowhere to go. They're stuck in a lose-lose situation. Surely, returning to Zimbabwe would leave them jobless and starving. Botswana may be a safe haven. Although, as I witnessed myself, Zimbabweans are highly discriminated against and often blamed for any problem that may arise in Botswana, whether or not they're actually responsible. Sadly, living under such discrimination has become a way of life for struggling Zimbabweans who are left with no other alternative. They face death in their native country because of poor economic conditions and life-threatening violence because of on-going tensions in South Africa.

I do find it interesting, yet somewhat disheartening, that both the recent genocide (i.e., in Sudan, Kenya and Rwanda) and current bloodshed (i.e., in Zimbabwe and South Africa) is taking place in Africa--the cradle of civilization.

Why must we turn to violence and revolution first in order to establish a better future?

You're right, Anonymous. If only we could learn from our past. Kate's points show that we (we is a collective global term) haven't learned. And what about Darfur, Sudan? More than 200,000 people are dead by violence, starvation and disease, more than two million people are displaced and tens of thousands of women have been raped.

Let's hope we learn from the past. Otherwise, history's sure to repeat itself. And surely no one wants to see another bloodbath like the Khmer Rouge fiasco. Although, I do see a similar story playing out in Zimbabwe under Mugabe's rule. And it also played out in Uganda in the 1970s under the "leadership" of Idi Amin, who promised a golden age for Ugandans but was responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands following ethnic persecutions and bloody tirades, leaving the country in ruin. (The story was recently romanticized for Hollywood in the movie The Last King of Scotland. Minus the love story, it's a great take on the real events).
